Why Gen Z Thinks They're Great Cooks (But Aren't Cooking from Scratch!) (2025)

Are we really as good in the kitchen as we think we are? A recent survey has revealed some interesting insights about Gen Z's cooking abilities, and it might just make you question your own culinary skills!

Gen Z, the self-proclaimed masters of the kitchen, surprisingly know the fewest recipes from scratch compared to other generations. Despite their confidence, the numbers don't lie. A poll of 2,000 adults showed that Gen Z could only cook an average of 10 dishes with a recipe and a mere 5 without. This is a far cry from the 14 and 9 dishes the average person can manage, respectively.

But here's where it gets controversial... when asked to rate their cooking skills, Gen Z confidently labeled themselves as 'excellent' cooks, with 18% claiming this title. Millennials weren't far behind, with 15% also feeling pretty confident in the kitchen. However, their actual cooking repertoire tells a different story.

So, what are Gen Z and Millennials cooking if not a wide variety of dishes? Well, it seems like simplicity is key. The most common dishes they feel comfortable whipping up are basic yet satisfying: a jacket potato, omelet, or scrambled eggs on toast. Nothing wrong with that, right?

But here's the part most people miss: despite their lofty ambitions to try adventurous recipes, like homemade bread or a complex Indian curry, half of all respondents admitted to cooking the same meals week after week. And 42% of Gen Z confessed to making the same dish multiple times a week!

The factors influencing their cooking choices also varied by age. Boomers, for example, prioritized being economical and using up ingredients they already had at home. On the other hand, Gen Z and Millennials were more influenced by the kitchen tools they owned, their fitness goals, and whether they had a meal kit.

When it comes to inspiration, Gen X and Boomers still turn to good old cookbooks, while Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to be influenced by social media trends and new cookware.

Despite their confidence, Gen Z and Millennials are also the most eager to improve their cooking skills. They're interested in a wider range of kitchen gadgets and innovative products like all-in-one pans and multicookers.

And here's a fun fact: all generations have experienced some sort of kitchen mishap that has put them off cooking at some point. From burning food or themselves to realizing they're missing an ingredient halfway through, these blunders are a universal experience.

So, are we really as adventurous in the kitchen as we think we are? Or are we all stuck in a culinary rut, cooking the same dishes week after week? And could a lack of trust in our cookware be holding us back from true culinary creativity?
