As the Kentucky football team gears up for spring practice, there's a buzz around the program's transformation under Will Stein. In a recent interview, we got to know Cutter Leftwich, the offensive line coach tasked with rebuilding the team's defensive prowess. - A Life in the Trenches
Leftwich's journey is a true gridiron story. Born into a coaching family, his father, Spencer, spent three decades coaching at various colleges, from Stephen F. Austin to Pitt and Arizona. Cutter himself played college football at McNeese State, starting 20 games at center, but an injury cut his playing career short. However, his love for the game and his position as an offensive lineman remained unwavering.
"I've always been an offensive lineman, with my hand on the ground. I've never even scored a touchdown," Leftwich shared, emphasizing his dedication to the trenches.

While Cutter toiled in the trenches, his older brother, Mack, was making a name for himself as a quarterback. Mack's coaching career has been on the rise, earning him two Broyles Award nominations for his work as an assistant coach. In 2024, Mack's Texas State offense was firing on all cylinders, but fate had a different plan.
"Mack was scheduled to face off against my North Texas Mean Green team in a bowl game, but he left to become the Texas Tech play-caller before the matchup," Cutter revealed. Fast forward to the College Football Playoff a year later, and the brothers found themselves on opposite sidelines.
"Me and my brother are close, but leading up to that game, there was little chatter between us. Our mom was a nervous wreck!" Leftwich recalled.
In the end, Cutter's Ducks emerged victorious, blanking Texas Tech 23-0 in the Orange Bowl. "The family chat was buzzing after that one, definitely in my favor!" he laughed.

When it comes to buffalo wings, Leftwich is a man of simple pleasures. While some prefer the intricate flavors of flats, Leftwich sticks to the classic drum.
"I'm a drums guy. I take the easy road and drench them in ranch. No bite goes undipped!" he declared.

Leftwich and Will Stein share a unique connection. They first worked together when Leftwich was a graduate assistant at UTSA, where Stein served as the pass game coordinator. Leftwich also spent time as an assistant offensive line coach at Oregon during Stein's tenure there.
"I had the opportunity to live with Coach Stein during the transition. He's fiery and energetic, and his pregame speeches inspire players to run through brick walls," Leftwich shared.
"Stein loves scoring points, but he's also an amazing person who cares deeply about his players and colleagues. That's why I've always followed him."
