Tanzania Govt. Seizes Contraband Cooking Oil, Averting Sh400M Loss! (2026)

The government has recently seized a significant amount of smuggled cooking oil, averting a potential loss of over Sh400 million in tax revenue. The oil, packed in 23,755 20-liter containers, was imported through the Kunduchi Port in Dar es Salaam. Only about 5,000 containers had proper documentation, according to TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Mwenda. This discovery highlights the importance of adhering to import regulations, as smuggling undermines the economy and reduces government revenue. The TRA Commissioner for Customs, Juma Hassan, explained that all imported goods must pass through official ports and follow established procedures, regardless of whether they require permits or not. This is to ensure national security and public safety. The consignment was seized after members of the public provided information, and the importer was required to pay a fine equivalent to 50% of the tax due. However, the seizure has sparked controversy, as citizens have accused officials at small ports, including Kunduchi, of obstructing business activities. Residents and port workers claim that officials selectively work with certain traders, discouraging others from offloading cargo at the port and depriving workers of employment opportunities. This has led to a loss of trust in TRA officials, with traders offloading goods elsewhere due to the bureaucracy. Mr. Salum Athuman expressed frustration, stating that the port now operates only once a month. In response, Commissioner Mwenda assured residents that the authority serves all traders without discrimination and plans to address the concerns by providing tax education and finding legal import solutions.
