A CHINESE car giant has revealed plans to install hundreds of 'game-changing' EV chargers across the UK, revolutionizing electric vehicle (EV) charging. These new chargers can significantly boost EV range, adding an impressive 250 miles in just five minutes. This is a substantial improvement over current charging speeds, which typically add around 172 miles in 15 minutes.
BYD, the world's largest EV seller, surpassing Tesla, has announced the arrival of its 1,000kW ultra-rapid 'flash chargers'. These chargers are twice as powerful as Tesla's V4 Supercharger, which can only manage up to 500kW and cover 172 miles in 15 minutes. The Chinese firm's devices are set to transform the EV charging experience.
The chargers will initially be available at BYD's expanding network of dealerships in the UK, which now boasts over 125 showrooms. However, BYD is also exploring other partnerships and locations to ensure these chargers are accessible where they are most needed. This strategic approach aims to make EV charging more convenient and efficient for UK drivers.
Bono Ge, BYD's country manager, shared insights with PA, stating, 'The flash charging network will continue to grow, but we need to establish a certain global network size before expanding further in the UK.' BYD aims to start with 300 units, carefully monitoring utilization and charging prices to ensure a reasonable and cost-effective service for consumers.
These flash chargers are an integral part of BYD's Super e-Platform, which integrates cutting-edge battery and electric motor technology with the charging devices. This innovation promises to significantly enhance the charging speed of older EVs, allowing them to charge approximately 20 to 30 percent faster than usual. Additionally, the newest models will benefit from an impressive 1.2 miles of range added per second.
Denza, a premium BYD sub-brand launching in the UK this year, is the first model to utilize these remarkable charging speeds. The Denza Z9GT EV employs the latest 'Blade' battery technology, which is fully compatible with the flash chargers, further showcasing the potential for rapid and efficient EV charging in the future.
