NEC Unveils Revolutionary Vehicle Management System for Autonomous Driving at Tokyo International Airport
NEC Corporation, a global technology leader, is making waves in the aviation industry with its cutting-edge vehicle management equipment (VME) for autonomous vehicles in restricted areas of Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport). This groundbreaking technology, developed in collaboration with Japan's largest airlines, promises to revolutionize ground operations at one of the world's busiest airports.
The VME system, an order from the East Japan Civil Aviation Bureau, includes advanced signal equipment that seamlessly synchronizes with autonomous vehicles and sophisticated camera systems to eliminate blind spots. In December, towing tractors with level 4 autonomous driving capabilities began operating in Haneda Airport's restricted areas, managed by ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS CO., LTD. and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd.
With rising air traffic, airports are under increasing pressure to streamline ground operations and reduce labor costs. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), airlines, and airport operators are collaborating to automate towing tractors and buses, traditionally driven by human operators. However, the unique challenges of airport environments, such as operating rules for runways, taxiways, and aprons, demand extensive technical optimization.
NEC's VME system draws on the company's extensive experience in air traffic control and airport-related systems, developed over more than half a century. This expertise, combined with close collaboration with airlines and autonomous vehicle manufacturers, enables NEC to provide a comprehensive solution for autonomous driving.
The VME system also introduces automatic signal control at airport intersections, ensuring safe and efficient traffic management for both human drivers and autonomous vehicles. Cameras in low-visibility areas transmit video to autonomous vehicle operators, enhancing safety and covering blind spots.
Looking ahead, NEC is committed to leveraging digital technologies to build a next-generation mobility society. The company aims to create a safe, secure, and efficient transportation infrastructure, setting a new standard for autonomous driving in airport environments.
NEC Corporation, founded in 1899, is dedicated to creating social value and promoting a sustainable world where everyone can reach their full potential. With its innovative VME system, NEC is paving the way for a future where autonomous vehicles seamlessly operate in complex airport environments.
