In a thrilling display of golfing prowess, Sweden's rising star Linn Grant clinched the LPGA Annika title, leaving her American rival Jennifer Kupcho in the dust. But this victory is more than just a win; it's a historic moment for Swedish golf.
Grant, with a remarkable 65 on Sunday, secured a three-stroke victory at the LPGA Annika at Pelican, Florida. This achievement marks a full-circle moment for the 26-year-old, who now stands as the first Swede to win the tournament named after the iconic Swedish golfer, Annika Sorenstam.
"It's incredibly satisfying," Grant expressed, reflecting on the significance of her win. But here's where it gets interesting: Grant's triumph adds to her already impressive resume, which includes a prior LPGA title in 2023 and an astonishing six wins on the Ladies European Tour.
As the 29th unique winner of an LPGA event this season and the fourth Swede to do so, Grant's success is a testament to her talent. She entered the final round with a one-stroke lead over Kupcho and quickly extended it with birdies on the second, fifth, seventh, and ninth holes. This early surge left Kupcho, who managed four birdies and two bogeys on the front nine, trailing by three strokes.
"The competition was intense, especially on the first nine," Grant acknowledged, praising Kupcho's performance. "It motivated me to raise my game."
The drama continued as the world's 53rd-ranked Grant birdied the 14th, only for the 40th-ranked Kupcho to respond with a birdie on the 15th, narrowing the gap to three strokes with three holes to play. But Grant's birdie on the 17th sealed the deal, allowing her to comfortably bogey the 18th and still tap in for the win.
The tournament saw impressive performances from other players, too. Mexico's Gaby Lopez secured third place with a 65, while England's Charley Hull shared fourth with Americans Auston Kim and Lucy Li, all finishing with a 66. American Brooke Matthews also made her mark, scoring a hole-in-one at the 12th hole, a remarkable feat that left her in awe.
