Health Alert: Women Using GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications at Risk
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A critical health warning has been issued for women using GLP-1 weight loss medications, highlighting potential complications related to body balance changes. These medications, which delay gastric emptying to aid weight loss, are estimated to be used by one in eight people. However, they may also lead to lesser-known side effects in women.
Dr. Kesha Williams, founder of Cool Comforts, has developed a product called the V-Pod (https://www.hervpod.com/) to help relieve infection itching and irritation. Williams shared her personal struggle with chronic yeast infections during her monthly cycle, which led to the creation of the V-Pod. This product, which is placed in a freezer and then in undergarments, is designed to provide relief.
Icy Williams, interim COO of Cool Comforts, emphasized the product's importance for elderly and menopausal women. She noted that while the V-Pod is primarily marketed for yeast infections, it is particularly beneficial for women in these age groups. Dr. Susan Oakley, a urologist and pelvic reconstructive surgeon, added that many women are using the V-Pod to manage heat, pain, and itching.
Oakley explained that GLP-1 medications, such as semiglutides like Ozempic, can affect the gut and digestive system, disrupting the body's pH balance. She warned that this disruption can lead to potential complications, including incontinence, fecal seepage, and an increased risk of infections. To manage symptoms, Dr. Oakley recommends using products like the V-Pod and suggests over-the-counter supplements such as proanthocyanidins (PACs) and probiotics. PACs are found in the deep red color of plant foods like cherries, while probiotics, which contain good bacteria, can be found in yogurt.
