But with the arrival of Gemini, my trusty old friend has been challenged. Gemini's multimodal capabilities and more advanced models have disrupted my routine, forcing me to question whether it can truly replace Google Lens.
I decided to test Gemini's capabilities on my Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE tablet, making it my primary visual search tool. One of the most significant differences I noticed was Gemini's ability to handle complex, conversational questions. While Google Lens is content with standard web-based visual matching, Gemini engages in a relevant and responsive dialogue, allowing for follow-up questions and adjustments on the fly.
For example, I can ask Gemini about a suggested recipe, adjust ingredient measurements, or request a new recipe mid-conversation. This level of conversational nuance is a game-changer, making Google Lens feel rigid in comparison. Gemini's direct access to Google's most advanced AI models also provides deeper and more accurate answers, especially with the Flash model for quicker results.
However, Google Lens is not without its strengths. It excels at straightforward object identification and quickly scouring the internet for relevant visual matches and translations. Google has also added new capabilities over time, such as the Live feature and the Create tool for image generation. But Gemini's flexibility and superior contextual awareness make it a more powerful option for everyday visual tasks.
I plan to continue using Gemini for most of my visual searches, while keeping Google Lens around for quick, frictionless tasks like live translation. Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on your specific workflow needs. While Gemini may have disrupted my routine, it has also opened my eyes to the possibilities of more advanced visual search tools.
