Emirates has solidified its position as the world's largest buyer of wide-body jets by ordering 65 more Boeing 777-9 aircraft, valued at $38 billion. This decision comes as Boeing agrees to conduct a feasibility study for a larger 777-10 variant, marking a significant commitment from Emirates to Boeing's 777X program. Despite recent delays in the 777X program, Emirates remains steadfast in its support, with a total of 270 777X family jets now on order. The airline's CEO, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, emphasized the long-term benefits of this commitment, highlighting the preservation of high-value factory jobs. The deal also provides Emirates with flexibility, allowing them to convert their 777-9 order to the 777-10 if Boeing proceeds with its development. This strategic move underscores Emirates' confidence in Boeing's capabilities and its willingness to invest in future-proof aircraft. The airshow's attention now shifts to whether Emirates will also expand its Airbus A350 fleet, given the 777X's delayed entry into service and the airline's historical preference for the Airbus A380 superjumbo. However, Emirates' president, Tim Clark, expressed a cautious optimism, noting the risk-averse nature of both Boeing and Airbus in developing larger models of their long-haul jets.
