Unveiling the Bulgari Icons: A Creative Director's Journey

Two years ago, Mary Katrantzou, Bulgari's first creative director of leather goods and accessories, embarked on a captivating journey through the brand's archives. Her mission: to breathe new life into Bulgari's iconic jewelry pieces and transform them into functional, yet luxurious, accessories.
Katrantzou's exploration began with a deep dive into Bulgari's rich history, dating back to its founding by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari in 1884. It was during this process that she discovered the brand's signature motifs, such as the ancient Greek- and Roman-inspired Monete coin, the snakelike Serpenti, and the circular Bulgari Bulgari logo. These motifs became the foundation for her debut collection of minaudières, appropriately named Icons.
The collection comprises five limited-edition bags, each available in two sizes. These bags are not just accessories; they are exquisite works of art, incorporating precious stones like amethyst, tiger's-eye, and malachite. Each bag is inspired by an iconic woman, including fashion and cinema legend Isabella Rossellini, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, supermodel Linda Evangelista, actor Kim Ji-won, and architect Sumayya Vally. Katrantzou asked these women to write personal essays on subjects like creativity, tradition, and life lessons, which were then printed as miniature books, perfectly sized to fit inside the bags.
Isabella Rossellini, whose family had close ties with the Bulgari family, wrote about her pursuit of a master's degree in animal behavior and conservation in her 60s. She poignantly notes that being an icon is not a profession but an attribute, something that adds depth and interest to one's life beyond their job.
