The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly set to sign right-handed reliever Derek Law to a minor league contract, according to MLB insider Robert Murray. This move comes as the team looks to strengthen its bullpen, with two key players, Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk, still recovering from Tommy John surgery. Law, a 35-year-old veteran, brings valuable experience, having pitched in the majors for the Washington Nationals in 2024, posting a 2.60 ERA and a save in 90 innings. However, his season was cut short due to a right elbow flexor strain, which led to a 15-day injured list stint. Law's journey to the Diamondbacks is a bit of a comeback story. He was on a rehab assignment for the Double-A Harrisburg Senators and Triple-A Rochester Red Wings in June 2025, but was then placed on the 60-day injured list for right forearm inflammation. Despite these setbacks, Law's career ERA of 3.69 and WHIP of 1.37 in MLB make him a valuable addition to the team. The deal, as reported by Murray, includes a $1.5 million payout if Law stays in the majors, with potential incentives worth up to $500,000. However, Law's return to the Diamondbacks won't be immediate. He underwent surgery for the injury last July and is expected to make a 'midseason return' in 2026, according to an Instagram post by MLB Transactions Daily. With spring training fast approaching, the Diamondbacks are gearing up for the season, with pitchers and catchers set to report to Salt River Fields on February 10th. The team's first game against the Rockies is scheduled for February 20th, and fans are eagerly anticipating the return of a strong bullpen, including the potential addition of Law.
