Burnaby Schools: Proposed 3-Year Calendar 2026-2029 - Your Feedback Matters! (2026)

Are you a parent, teacher, or community member interested in the education system of Burnaby, British Columbia? The Burnaby School District is inviting you to share your thoughts on the proposed three-year calendar for the school years 2026-27 through 2028-29. But here's where it gets controversial... The calendar includes a unique approach to school closure days, which may spark differing opinions. Since 2014, the Burnaby School District has been operating with five school closure days, and the instructional time lost is added to the remaining days in session. This means that the district has been able to maintain the required hours of instruction each year. However, in the 2026-27 and 2028-29 school years, Good Friday, a statutory holiday, falls during the typical period for spring break. As a result, one of the school closure days has been allocated to the Friday before winter break. This may cause some disruption for families who plan their vacations around the traditional spring break. The proposed calendar also includes two Professional Development Days chosen by each school over the course of the school year, for a total of six, including District-wide days. These are published in the spring before the following year's calendar. If you have feedback or comments, please share them by emailing calendar@burnabyschools.ca. Your input is crucial in shaping the education experience for students in the Burnaby School District. Don't miss the opportunity to have your voice heard!
