The Carry-On Conundrum: What Air NZ and Jetstar Want Travelers to Know
Boarding a crowded flight can be a stressful experience, especially when you arrive at your seat only to find the overhead lockers already full. It's not just about the inconvenience; it's a safety issue too. Excessive carry-on luggage can cause delays, increase the risk of injury, and even compromise the safety of passengers and crew.
As airlines across Australasia tighten their rules on oversized cabin bags, travelers are left wondering: what are the carry-on regulations, and how do they differ between airlines?
To shed some light on this, 1News interviewed New Zealand's two largest carriers, Air New Zealand and Jetstar, to find out their carry-on policies and the reasons behind them.
Air New Zealand's Carry-On Policy
Air New Zealand allows passengers to bring one carry-on bag weighing up to 7kg, along with a small personal item like a handbag or laptop case. This policy is designed to align with the space and weight limitations of the overhead lockers across their fleet.
Rachel Lilley, the airline's head of regional airports, explains, "Our economy allowance of one carry-on bag up to 7kg plus a small personal item helps reduce the risk of injury to customers and crew, supports smoother boarding, and ensures on-time departures." She emphasizes that oversized or overweight bags can cause significant issues during boarding, including pressure on limited locker space, increased injury risks, and delays.
Air New Zealand is committed to enforcing this policy consistently to ensure a fair experience for all customers. Lilley advises travelers to check the requirements before their journey to avoid any surprises.
Jetstar's Carry-On Allowance
Jetstar's carry-on policy is slightly more lenient, allowing passengers to bring two carry-on items with a combined weight of up to 7kg. However, travelers can purchase an additional carry-on allowance of 7kg, resulting in a total of 14kg if needed.
The budget airline justifies its rules by prioritizing flight safety and punctuality. A spokesperson states, "Cabin baggage limits are applied across our network, including New Zealand routes, to support safe, on-time operations."
Despite this, Jetstar acknowledges that the current system can be stressful for travelers, especially with weight limits and gate weighing. The airline is currently reviewing its cabin baggage policy to address customer frustration and improve the boarding experience.
Any changes will be made in consultation with staff and will focus on enhancing the overall experience for travelers and front-line teams while maintaining safety and punctuality. As of now, no final decisions have been made.
